I had to share the painting I made today in honor of my dear friend Tonya and her son Sam. They both help propel me into business 12 years ago and I'll never ever forget it. Sam has a form of autism and because I love him so much, he is the reason I will always do what I can to raise awareness for this cause.
Tonya loved my artwork from the very beginning. The whole concept of "capturing moments in time" with artwork from hand and footprints meant more to her than anyone I have met in all the years I've been running Piggies and Paws. She understood the meaning of life on different level than most of us "first time" mommies. So, her passion for life and P&P was captivating. She wanted every new design I created for Sam and displayed them proudly in her home. She still owns and displays some of my one-of-a-kind "originals" in every corner of her home. :)
I've lived away from my friend and her family for 9 years now, but I'll never forget those days.... what she went through and what she taught me about being "real" under pressure/challenges, but "choosing" to press on with a positive attitude. In 1999, there wasn't much awareness or understanding of Autism like there is today. So, getting support as a mother of a child with autism was difficult and finding adequate academic resources, as Sam entered school was a struggle as well. I remember wanting to help make all the crooked paths straight, so her journey with her baby would be easier. But the truth is, looking back, she wouldn't have changed a thing. She accepted the path she was on and chose to use every experience to make herself "better" and not "bitter." With her positive outlook and amazing faith, her mind was clear and focused on doing whatever it took to find the best resources and opportunities for Sam. Her journey hasn't been easy, but through the years, her and Sam have conquered much and befriended many with their inspiring perseverance.
It is my hope, with the immeasurable reach of Social Media (which was non-existent 12 years ago), every parent or guardian raising a beautiful child with Autism will have all the support and resources they need to overcome any obstacles or challenges they face. Raising awareness through all Social Media platforms is definitely helping. Here are some of my faves for you: My favorite organization is Autism Speaks. My favorite campaign is Light it Up Blue and my new favorite way to support this cause is by purchasing the new stamps released by the UN today in support of World Autism Awareness Day! The artwork from eight artists diagnosed with Autism were chosen for these beautiful stamps and you know I can't resist celebrating a talented artist's creations!
Love you Ton & Sam. You mean more to me than you'll ever know.
